Detroit Lions LB leaves the company with an arm

The Detroit Lions lost defensive captain and middle linebacker Alex Anzalone to an upper-body injury in Sunday’s Week 11 game against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Anzalone remained on the ground after making the tackle on the first play of the Jaguars’ final drive before halftime. Jacksonville had a speed option towards the Lions sideline and Anzalone was in the tackle of Travis Etienne. Anzalone remained on the ground in front of his coaches, eventually standing up, holding his left arm and walking straight to the locker room.

The team quickly ruled Anzalone out due to a forearm injury. In the TV broadcast, Anzalone can be seen nodding to someone on the sidelines and then appearing to say, “It’s broken,” before the cameras cut away.

Anzalone, a team captain since joining Detroit as a free agent in 2021, has been one of the key leaders of Detroit’s resurgent defense, which entered Week 11 ranking fifth in the NFL in scoring defense. Anzalone ranked second on the team with 51 tackles, including six tackles for loss, and had four passes defensed. He is one of the experienced Lions leaders. Last year he led the team with a career-high 129 tackles.

The Lions are already lacking, especially on defense. The Lions are without defensive ends – Aidan Hutchinson (leg) and Marcus Davenport (chest) – and the backup options behind them. This week, tight end Sam LaPorta was ruled out after leaving last week’s win early with a shoulder injury that he described as “nothing serious.”

The Lions were healthy outside of LaPorta’s absence during the Jacksonville game and had players like linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez, who has been out the past two weeks with an ankle injury, back in the lineup.
