Steelers place veteran CB CJ Henderson on IR and sign RB Jonathan Ward to active roster

For the third time this season, the Pittsburgh Steelers added veteran running back Jonathan Ward to their active roster on Saturday. The move could signal that Ward will be in uniform for the Steelers for the fifth time this season in Sunday’s AFC North showdown with the Baltimore Ravens.

Ward, a five-year veteran, has five carries for 22 yards and has been back to return kickoffs for the Steelers at times this season. He may have to dress against the Ravens, as running back Jaylen Warren suffered a back injury this week and is still listed as questionable to play Sunday.

Ward’s promotion came when veteran cornerback CJ Henderson was placed on injured reserve. Henderson, the No. 9 overall draft pick in 2020, was signed to the Steelers’ practice squad on September 25 and added to the active roster on October 22. However, he has not played in uniform for any games for the Steelers.

Henderson appeared on the league-mandated injury report Thursday due to a neck injury. He did not train on Thursday and Friday.

In another move Saturday, the Steelers placed cornerback Zyon Gilbert on the injured list from the practice squad. Gilbert had been in and out of the Steelers’ camp roster and practice squad for the past three months and reportedly suffered a significant injury during practice this week. He has three NFL regular season appearances, all in 2022 for the New York Giants.
