Seattle Seahawks remain within striking distance, route 7-6 to San Francisco 49ers

The Seattle Seahawks were involved in a defensive slugfest early on the road and used a pair of field goals of 50+ yards from Jason Myers and some strong defense to keep a tight grip on the San Francisco 49ers, going into the break up 7-6 behind at Levis Stadium. .

After their bye week, after giving the 49ers 228 rushing yards in their first game in Week 6, the Seahawks held star Christian McCaffrey to just 37 yards on nine carries, limiting him to less than 4.2 yards per carry with a late tie, inflating that number. Linebackers Ernest Jones and Tyrice Knight anchored the much-improved run defense and combined for 10 tackles, swarming running backs around the line of scrimmage throughout the first half.

While San Francisco’s run game was largely kept in check — Brock Purdy took off for 32 yards on three carries, including a 10-yard touchdown run — Seattle put some more pressure on the quarterback and produced three pass breakups. Most notably, cornerback Devon Witherspoon threw up a pass intended for McCaffrey early in the second quarter and defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins hauled in his first career carom interception.

Offensively, the Seahawks had moderate success throwing the ball in the first half, with Geno Smith completing 11 of 14 passes for 91 yards, including a third down completion to Jaxon Smith-Njigba over the middle for a 20 pick yards. Smith-Njigba and Metcalf tied for the team lead with three receptions each, while running back Ken Walker III racked up 27 rushing yards on five carries, largely by creating his own yardage after contact.

Unfortunately, Seattle couldn’t keep Smith clean and continued an ugly seasonal trend with porous pass protection. After the quarterback initiated the attack inside San Francisco’s 30-yard line, right tackle Abraham Lucas was beaten by Nick Bosa, who teamed with Leonard Floyd for a sack and a loss of seven yards. Myers managed to save the drive with a 52-yard boot to give the Seahawks a 3-0 lead.

After Purdy used his legs to run for a 10-yard touchdown in response to cap a 12-play drive, the Seahawks again advanced past midfield, only for center Olu Oluwatimi to misfire a rocket shot that was too high was for Smith to corral, causing a loss of 17 yards. A promising drive was thwarted by that huge blunder, forcing Michael Dickson to punt two plays later.

Failing to take full advantage of Hankins’ monumental pick in 49ers territory, the Seahawks actually lost 10 yards on three plays after the turnover, ending with left tackle Charles Cross being run down by pass rusher Yetur Gross -Matos, who immediately devoured Smith. for a bag. Once again, Myers saved the day by narrowly kicking a 57-yard field goal over the uprights to cut the deficit to one point.

Trailing by just one point, Seattle will look to reverse its onslaught by opening the second half first with an excellent opportunity in front of it to snap a six-game losing streak against San Francisco and crawl back to the .500.
