My favorite supernatural horror series has started…

Samantha Morton and Ruby Stokes hug and look scared in The Burning Girls.

Paramount Plus is home to some great stuff, we even crowned it among our best streaming services, but I was disappointed when they removed one of my favorite shows from their library. I came across it by chance, after seeing it advertised on the platform, so it was disappointing to discover that it is no longer available there.

But I come with good news. If you want to check out The burning girlsyou can now watch it completely free on The Roku Channel, one of our recommendations for the best free streaming service. While my job is to convince you why you should watch it, you really have nothing to lose and you don’t need to sign up for a paid subscription. So I recommend you give it a try this weekend, especially if you’re looking for some great supernatural thrills and gothic horror vibes.

The burning girls is based on the novel of the same name by CJ Tudor. It’s a British series starring two of my favorite actresses, Samantha Morton and Ruby Stokes, the latter of which was great Lockwood & Co too (it’s just a shame Netflix canceled that!). Here they play a mother and daughter who move to the sleepy village of Chapel Croft, relocating from a larger city. Morton plays a priest, which checks all the boxes for horror fans. Weird new village with a dark past, a priest plagued by equally strange dreams and visions, it’s all there!

Why I Loved The Burning Girls

There are so many reasons why I recommend this series. For starters, it’s full of mystery from start to finish and you’re never quite sure who to trust. So if you like a series that keeps you guessing until the end, The burning girls will certainly do that. It’s also very easy to binge as there are only six episodes, so if you really want to, you can watch it in one weekend. Or a single day, in my case! Hey, sometimes you just get so caught up in something, right?

It’s also a slow-burn horror, which is something I personally enjoy. I like horrors that make you normal uncomfortable and doesn’t have to rely on constant shocking fears. I even quoted Woman of the Hour as my scariest movie of the year. While it’s not horror, it certainly uses some of the techniques that make the genre so fascinating to me. Sometimes less is more, and there is pure fear in the subtle nature of it all.

In The burning girlsThere is a sense of fear everywhere, and you cannot escape it no matter where you are. This village is just weird. Even if the horror isn’t happening on screen, your mind can wander and start thinking about what people are up to. What really happens behind closed doors? What is the truth about this place? You unravel a mystery and feel deeply unsettled, all the while rooting for our two protagonists.

To say more would be to give too much away, but it creeps toward a gripping finale that leaves you longing for a second season, even though one may never happen.
