Why Giants start QB Tommy DeVito after benching Daniel Jones

play

The New York Giants made a surprising decision about their future on Monday.

It wasn’t their decision to bench quarterback Daniel Jones. The team opted to use Tommy DeVito as his replacement instead of Drew Lock.

Lock served as the Giants’ backup in their first ten games of the season after signing a one-year, $5 million contract with the team during the 2024 NFL offseason. DeVito was inactive for every game as the team’s emergency quarterback, so it was assumed Lock would get the first crack at replacing Jones.

Instead, DeVito was elevated to the starting role ahead of Week 12. Here’s what you need to know about New York’s decision and why the second-year free agent from Illinois made the jump to Lock on the Giants’ depth chart.

Why are the Giants starting Tommy DeVito?

The Giants are selecting DeVito as the starter for a number of key reasons, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

First, Giants coach Brian Daboll has seen DeVito enjoy success in his system before. The undrafted 26-year-old was thrown into the fire during his rookie season and led the Giants to a 3-3 record in six starts. He completed 64% of his passes for 1,104 yards, eight touchdowns and three interceptions in those games, so Daboll should be confident the Illinois product can repeat that feat with better weapons, like Malik Nabers, at his disposal.

Additionally, Lock was injured for most of the preseason and didn’t get many reps as a result. He completed 4 of 10 passes for 17 yards and an interception in his limited preseason action before completing just 3 of 8 passes for 6 yards with 2 fumbles during mop-up work during the Giants’ Week 7 loss in 28-3 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

That may not be a huge sample size for Lock, but his shaky performance at those spots was apparently enough to convince Daboll to turn to DeVito as Jones’ replacement.

Daboll is expected to explain the decision during a press conference on Zoom on Monday at 11:45 a.m. ET.

Giants QB Depth Chart

Below is how the Giants’ depth chart stacks up after Jones’ benching:

  1. Tommy DeVito
  2. Drew Slot
  3. Daniel Jones

DeVito and Lock will get the rest of the quarterback duties for the Giants during the 2024 NFL season. Jones has a $23 million injury guarantee in his contract through 2025, so New York will try to prevent that from happening over the last seven games.

It’s not yet clear if the Giants will add another quarterback to their organization to further insulate themselves from playing Jones. Either way, it appears the 2019 first-round pick played his last loss against the Giants.
