Poland v Scotland LIVE: Nations League result as Andy Robertson dramatically saves the Scots from relegation

Steve Clarke could make a winning side change for Scotland’s big date against Poland

Andy Robertson’s last-minute goal saved Scotland from automatic relegation in the Nations League as the captain’s dramatic header gave Steve Clarke’s side a famous 2-1 win against Poland in Warsaw.

Scotland needed to win to avoid finishing bottom of League A1 but turned their run of late setbacks on its head when Robertson arrived at the back post and struck a powerful header into the net.

After losing their first three games of the season and drawing 0-0 with Portugal, Scotland ended their winless run on Friday with a late win over Croatia, before making it back-to-back victories with victory against Poland.

Scotland made the perfect start when John McGinn converted a chance inside just three minutes, but Poland’s Kamil PiÄ…tkowski fired home a stunning strike to equalize after 60 minutes.

At one point, when Portugal beat Croatia in Zagreb, another goal would have lifted Scotland into second place – enough to progress to the quarter-finals and claim a seeded place in World Cup qualifying.

But it ended in a draw in Zagreb, meaning Scotland will play a relegation play-off against one of the League B runners-up in March in a bid to maintain their top-flight status.

Scotland wrap up Nations League with final late twist as Andy Robertson has the final say

A 2-1 win in Warsaw sent Scotland above Poland into third place in Section A1 and set up a two-legged play-off against one of the second-tier runners-up in March for the right to remain among the elite.

John McGinn put Scotland ahead inside three minutes with his 20th international goal, moving the midfielder ahead of Ally McCoist into fifth place on Scotland’s all-time goalscorers list.

The World Cup pots

As it stands, Scotland should be in Pot 3 for December’s World Cup qualifying draw. There is a route to pot two, but a lot still needs to be done.

If the Czech Republic or Slovakia fail to beat Georgia or Estonia at home tomorrow, Scotland will join them.
