Bill Belichick is already trying to coach the Cowboys while Mike McCarthy’s chair is boiling

The Dallas Cowboys put in a commendable effort against the Houston Texans with the entire country watching Monday night football, but it feels like only a matter of time before the Texans assert their dominance on the scoreboard.

Despite the intensity, the Cowboys still look like a poorly coached team. They had to call a timeout on a Texans field goal attempt because they had twelve men on the field and let Joe Mixon go 45 yards untouched for the first touchdown of the game.

Bad tackling has plagued Dallas all season and it reared its ugly head in primetime. While the Texans’ crafty receivers have made life difficult, it’s when Mixon has had the edge that Mike McCarthy’s team has really become small in the tackling department.

Troy Aikman was critical of Dallas’ defense during the ESPN broadcast, and Bill Belichick followed suit when he appeared as a guest on the popular “ManningCast,” which airs on ESPN2.

That quote will undoubtedly get people talking about the relentless rumors linking Belichick to the Cowboys.

ESPN insider Adam Schefter mentioned Countdown on Monday evening that people around the league continue to believe Belichick will be Dallas’ next head coach.

That depends on whether Mike McCarhty loses his job, but that feels like a done deal. McCarthy’s contract expires at the end of the season and is widely expected not to be renewed.

While Belichick may be the best coach in NFL history, several prominent analysts aren’t convinced he’d be a slam-dunk. Belichick would be an upgrade over McCarthy, but some think he has lost his fastball as a head coach. Others have reservations about the coaching staff he would put together, especially the offensive coordinator.

It’s all open to interpretation, but it feels like it’s written in the stars that Belichick will be one of the first calls Jerry Jones makes this offseason.

It’s no secret that Jones likes coaches to have previous NFL experience. That’s why he hired McCarthy in 2020 and Mike Zimmer this past season to replace Dan Quinn as defensive coordinator. That’s why many believe former Titans head coach Mike Vrabel will be on the candidate list.

Either way, the Belichick talk has only just begun. There are six games left on the 2024 schedule. Any Cowboys reference he makes during his many media appearances will cause a stir. His criticism of the team’s sloppy tackling is a prime example of this.

If Belichick gets his hands on the keys to this operation, several players on the roster are in for a rude awakening.
