How to Train Your Dragon reveals first look at live-action Hiccup

Take a look at the first look at Hiccup in the live-action remake of How to train your dragon. The beloved friendship between Viking Hiccup and his faithful dragon Toothless is at the heart of the How to train your dragon franchise, which spawned three animated films. How to train your dragon now transitions from animated to live-action, starring Mason Thames (Black phone) with Hiccup. Empire has the first look at Thames as our main character Hiccup, fully decked out in his Viking gear as he finds himself in a Berk dragon pit with the crowd cheering him on.

Filmmaker Dean DeBlois directs the live-action How to train your dragonand he’s a veteran of the franchise, having also directed the previous three installments, with Chris Sanders joining him in the first film in 2010. The image in question – which you can see below – most likely comes while Hiccup has to pretend opposite each other. against Toothless, but as fans of the former How to train your dragon Remember, Hiccup shows his fellow Berkians that dragons are not to be feared.

“It’s so complicated when it comes to the stakes – a completely believable, photo-real dragon stomping around trying to kill it,” DeBlois said of the stakes being raised in the live-action adaptation of How to train your dragon. DeBlois went on to say that Hiccup “represents all the strange loners, which is a lot of us,” making him a relatable figure. “There was a bit of awkwardness, but also a vulnerability for him that (came) with the fact that he was 15 when we auditioned him,” he said of Mason Thames.

Thames added How to train your dragon his Nico Parker (The last of us) as Astrid, Gerard Butler reprising his voice role of Stoick the Vast from the animated films, Nick Frost as Gobber the Blech, Julian Dennison (Deadpool 2) as Fishlegs, Gabriel Howell (Night sleeper) as Snotlout, Bronwyn James (Masters of the air) as Ruffnut, and Harry Trevaldwyn (Ten percent) as Tuffnut.

The live action How to train your dragon arrives in theaters on June 13, 2025.
